As one of the most common used components of switching power supply, capacitor can reduce the ripple noise, enhance the reliability and transient response of power supply. However, since there are variety of capacitors in the market, how to make a wise choice is a problem.
1. Type of capacitors
While chip capacitor, plug-in capacitor based on packaging, there are ceramic capacitor, electrolytic capacitor, mica capacitor according to medium. And owing to the different structure, there are fixed capacitor, half-fixed capacitor and bariable capacitor.
People are easily suffered from choice difficulty syndrome when face so many choices, but no need to trouble. Only ceramic capacitor, electrolytic capacitor and tantalum capacitor are widely used on switching power supply. Let’s have a look to the performance parameter of capacitor.
2. Key parameter of capacitor
Only know better on the internal key parameter of capacitor that can make a wise choice. Key parameter is the same for almost all capacitors, which includes value, withstand voltage, ESR, value accuracy, the allowable working temperature range.
3. Perfomance of capacitor matters the capacitor selection for power supply.
Ceramic capacitor, electrolytic capacitor and tantalum capacitor are widely used on switching power supply design.
Ceramic capacitor: Less value, better high frequency, wider working temperature, ESP less than electrolytic capacitor, with small size.
Electrolytic capacitor: value can be big, narrow working temperature range, bigger ESR, heteropolarity.
Tantalum capacitor: Least ESR, value bigger than ceramic capacitor, heteropolarity, poor safety, easy on fire.
4. Working environment of capacitor
There are circuit internal and external environments, which internal environment includes frequency, voltage and current value, the main function a capacitor plays in circuit. Capacitor type can be decided based on circuit frequency, and voltage value according to withstanding voltage, and the capacitor value can be referred according to the main function of circuit.
External environment, working environment and safety requirement all can narrow the choice range of capacitor selection.
